When choosing products, Fungal Acne-Safe and Fragrance Free are my baselines in order to avoid ingredients that are more likely to cause breakouts and irritation. If something is not fully FA-safe, it is only because of an ingredient or 2.
"Fungal Acne-Safe" means products that do not have fatty acids/oils, esters, polysorbates, fatty alcohols, or certain ferments: these ingredients feed the yeast Malassezia which causes Malassezia Folliculitis aka Fungal Acne. Yeast imbalances don't cause only fungal acne, it unlocks a myriad of sensitivity conditions. An unbalanced microbiome has a hard time supporting your skin barrier–which can cause inflammatory conditions such as perioral dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, acne, and rosecea. Because of that, I love FA-safe is a good baseline for skin barrier repair and managing skin conditions.
fragrance free +
No added fragrance, "parfum", "aroma", or fragrance from essential oils
niacinamide +
Niacinamide has become a popular ingredient in skincare + makeup products. However, using multiple products with niacinamide can cause irritation, and so it's helpful to note.
"clean beauty" +
No glactomyces or other fermented ingredients. Ferments will often pass FA-checkers, but they can be triggers for perioral dermatits, fungal acne, and irritation breakouts.
"non-comedogenic" +
Formulated with ingredients that have a lower risk of clogging pores. FYI: this term is generally unregulated and pore-clogging ingredient checkers will often have conflicting results.
exfoliating +
Toners or serums tagged as "exfoliating" contain AHA (glycolic, lactic, mandelic), BHA (salicylic), PHA, or azelaic acid.
hydrating +
Toners or serums tagged as "hydrating" have ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, glycerin, centella, panthenol.
